Skulduggery Pleasant on Blue Peter - 30/08/12
It turns out I am terrible at 30 day memes. So let’s finish this up.
Day 28: Lord vile or darquesse.
Lord Vile, because his reasons make more sense to me naq gung erirny jnf zhpu zber fubpxvat.
Day 29:What made you start reading the series.
I think I watched a Youtube video recommending it at the same time I saw it mentioned on some blog or another. Both things weren’t things I read/watched regularly, but seeing this same book in two places made it stick in my mind.
Funny story though, I thought it was a graphic novel because of the cover art, and I had only seen the UK art. So when I went searching for the book I was looking in all the wrong places, and when my friend finally found it for me I was like “WTF, this isn’t it.”
But it was it, and it was awesome.
Day 30: Anything else you want to say :)
I’m going to have to wait until the end of September to get read Kingdom of the Wicked because I’m in the US. I’m saving on shipping by having my roommate buy it for me during a visit to London, but because of that I have to wait soooooo long.
Please nobody spoil me!
Facelessness is something that I have this really irrational fear of. Like, it just freaks me the fuck out. Like, it happened twice or so on Are You Afraid of the Dark? that I remember, and both times were terrifying. The 50s episode on Doctor Who where Rose’s face is stolen? SO TERRIFYING. The one Brothers Grimm movie where the little mud gingerbread man steals the kid’s face? I was like hiding under my chair. It is a really irrational but deep-seated visceral fear of mine.
So the Faceless Ones win here because I find the thought of them more inherently terrifying.
Here’s me getting all caught up with the present!
I will try to actually finish the rest on schedule.

Day 22: Favourite scene.
Ohhhh, goodness. That is difficult. Skulduggery Pleasant has so! many! good! scenes!
I think it changes from moment to moment, so if you ask me in an hour my answer might be different, but I think it’s in Playing with Fire when Fxhyqhttrel gnxrf ersyrpgvba Inyxlevr gb or xvyyrq. Day 23: Your favourite quote.
Like above, I think this changes constantly. Most of them are funny, but the books say some pretty sweet and insightful things as well sometimes, so we’re going to go with this.
“There’s no such thing as winning or losing. There is won and there is lost, there is victory and defeat. There are absolutes. Everything in between is still left to fight for. Serpine will have won only when there is no one left to stand against him. Until then, there is only the struggle, because tides do what tides do–they turn.”
Day 24: Your favourite thing about the series.
Its humour and heart. That it allows itself to be just fun and action-packed. And that it is an action book series with lots of great fighting all while having this really great and fully developed female protagonist and a wide collection of women in the supporting cast.
Day 25: Favourite villain.
I kind of love Springheeled Jack. You know how I’ve said I wouldn’t necessarily cast Benedict Cumberbatch as Skulduggery? I’d love to see him bite into a strange role like Springheeled Jack.
Day 26: Character who has coolest power.
Fletcher Renn. Seriously. I want that power so damn much.
I have been waiting for this one the whoooole time, omg. Fantasy casting is so fun to me. It’s like this great big puzzle.
So, here goes.
Skulduggery Pleasant

Michael Fassbender. (disclaimer)
There were rumors a while back that a film was going to be made with Johnny Depp. Firstly I think it’s unlikely that that was ever happening, but secondly? NO. Just, no. And I think Mr. Depp is a really good actor. Lots of people fantasy cast Benedict Cumberbatch or David Tennant here, and I get that. Tall, lanky, and Mr. Cumberbatch has a very nice voice. But, and this may be silly, I feel like Skulduggery and Valkyrie should be played by people who are actually Irish. I’m less stringent with the rest of the cast, but the two leads? It’s an Irish story. It takes place with Irish people in Ireland. The leads should actually be Irish. So, who’s Irish, a good actor, the right build, has experience with action sequences and a very nice voice of his own? Michael Fassbender.
Stephanie Edgley/Valkyrie Cain

Caitlin Blackwood or an unknown. Again, Irish actress (though she plays Scottish well on Doctor Who) and she’s about the right age. I think, from what we’ve seen of her, that she does deadpan really well, which is a must for our lead.
China Sorrows

Gugu Mbatha-Raw
So, interesting story, before it was revealed that China and Mr. Bliss were siblings, I had completely on my own imagined them both as black. I was imagining China as some mix between like Gina Torres and Genelle Williams only British.
Later on, of course, it became clear to me that she was meant to be white and I must have missed something in the description. But I’m still really attached her as a black woman, so that’s my first go-to when it comes to the fantasy cast. Gugu is gorgeous, talented (I’ve seen her in both Doctor Who and undercovers), and has awesome hair.
If, however, I had to cast a white China, I have to admit that Katie McGrath is both Irish and fits the book’s description of her perfectly.

Mr. Bliss

Idris Elba
I pretty much just picture Mr. Bliss as that social worker from Lilo and Stitch, but I can’t cast him because he is a cartoon character. But Idris Elba is reaaaaallllly awesome and also hot and has played that kind of stern character before, so I would love to watch him give it a go.
I don’t have a white Mr. Bliss. No one comes to mind. So he’s just black.
Tanith Low

Carey Mulligan
Because she’s awesome, okay? Okay.
Ghastly Bespoke

Philip Glenister.
That or David Morrisey, as they both can do “rough and angry” and “sensitive and thoughtful” well and give off a kind of well-worn vibe. But I think Philip Glenister has more of the voice for it.
And finally, one more bonus cast
Finbar Wrong

Look, I don’t care if he looks very different from the description in the book. We all know that Bill Bailey plays hilarious, kind, esoteric strung-out hippies better than anyone and I love him and he would be so good at it so there.
Honest-to-goodness, I just read through summaries of all of the books trying to decide which was my favourite, and came up completely undecided. There are just so many things I like about all of them!
So, in rot13 so as not to spoil anyone, these are a the reasons I might pick any one of these books to be my favourite.

China Sorrows/the ladies
No, but seriously though, I don’t do much shipping in this fandom. Except that I want China to settle down with a nice woman one day when this is all over.
I do not count on this happening.
Day 17: A song that reminds you of the series.
Objectively, there are definitely far clearer answers to this question with more genocides underneath their belt, but on a personal level I think Auron Tenebrae is a pretty contemptible jackass and I pretty much want to spit on him.
