List of non-ableist words

mermaidmittromney:

hellomorningsun:

I want to compile a list of words folks can use instead of ableist slang, I grabbed a few from this page to start this off, please add to the list as this circulates. And reblog!

  • flimsy
  • inadequate
  • insufficient
  • unconvincing
  • unsatisfactory
  • undesireable
  • inept
  • pathetic
  • deficient
  • hollow
  • meager
  • perfunctory
  • absurd
  • ridiculous
  • lousy
  • fucked up
  • rubbish
  • irrational
  • disappointing
  • regrettable
  • ludicrous
  • silly
  • pointless
  • an unholy mess of…

This list is a big help, but I found it a little insufficient to convey an idea like ‘I had a crazy day’.

So I did a bit more research and I came across this neat trick: say exactly what you mean.

When you feel like saying you had a ‘crazy’ day, you probably had a chaotic day, an overwhelming day, a tiresome day, an exhausting day. There you go, all acceptable substitutes.

If you want to convey the idea that the party you went to last night was crazy, you probably went to a ridiculously fun party, to a party that was out of control, to an amazing, awesome party.

I don’t know about you but ‘crazy’ seems to be the slur I have the most trouble editing out of my speech, because it’s so ingrained in my vocabulary. But with this trick I have found that it’s actually a shortcut to an idea I am trying to convey anyway, so it’s become easier and easier to avoid saying it. :)

Not sure how many people know this but Miyazaki once wanted to do an anime adaptation of Pippi Longstocking in the 70s

whitepool:

but it was dropped because they couldn’t get permission from the original creator

BUT HOT DAYUM AT THE CONCEPT ART IT’S LITERALLY THE CUTEST THING…

(also the protagonist of Panda go panda was probably based on her design)

Dear Studio Ghibli,

I know this is like the third year in a row I have suggested this but could you please do your own adaptation of The Nutcracker? It would be amazing.

Jessica

Understanding the motivation behind a characters actions is not the same as excusing those actions.

Enjoying a characters complexity isn’t being blind to their faults.

I don’t want a perfect character, I want a character I can love, get mad at, laugh at, cry at, curse at…I want them to feel real.

Utena - Brick By Boring Brick AMV (by dangallacher)

To all the Utena fans out there, I HIGHLY recommend this vid. It goes with an awesome song, fits the universe of the series to a T, and isn’t saturated with effects. XD

"‘There are all kinds of courage,’ said Dumbledore, smiling. ‘It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies, but just as much to stand up to our friends. I therefore award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom.’"

I just realized today how much more meaningful this quote is when you remember Dumbledore’s backstory. For years, Albus remained at Gellert Grindelwald’s side even as Grindelwald became more and more corrupt, simply because he was his friend. He turned a blind eye to the immorality of Gellert’s plans. He couldn’t bring himself to stand up to Grindelwald because he didn’t want to jeopardize their friendship. Even as an adult, he didn’t confront Grindelwald until it was nearly too late. Those ten points weren’t awarded to Neville just so Gryffindor would win the house cup. They were awarded because Dumbledore recognized that Neville, at the age of 11, was far braver than the young Albus had ever been. (via cobbledstories)

..and this is why Neville was always “bad ass”… long before he had to turn himself into a kamikaze with no regard for his own personal safety in order to feel he was worth anything.
