I want to talk about how much I love this scene.
When a hero cries in fiction, it’s often because of some specific awful event- because they’ve lost a loved one, for example, or because they’re in intense physical pain. The crying serves the purpose of showing how terrible the event is, or how the tough hero is actually “sensitive” or “has inner depth” or something.
Here, Korra is crying because she feels upset and overwhelmed, and because crying is a natural response to those feelings. That’s it. The crying is not a big deal in and of itself, and there was no one specific thing that made her cry. It’s just how she’s feeling in general.
In real life, sometimes people just cry, like Korra’s doing here. And it’s not shameful, it’s not a big deal… it’s ordinary.
And then her friends-without making a big deal of her tears, or teasing her for them- come to try to comfort her, which is also nice.
