I was in Tokyo a few weeks ago and had the pleasure of meeting the artists behind the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” graphic novels.  I was surprised to learn the studio of Gurihiru, consists of a team of two!  Chifuyu Sasaki (center) does all the penciling and inking and Naoko Kawano (left) is the colorist.  They bring a really charming sensibility to their work that, while stylistically different from the show, feels very “Avatar.”  It’s been fun to collaborate with them, as well as the talented writer of the comics, Gene Yang.  Really, I just check in with them from time to time — they’re doing all the hard work!
Volume 3 of “The Promise” comes out in October.  And Gurihiru and Gene are currently hard at work on volume 1 of the next comic storyline, “The Search.”  The search for whom, you ask?  Oh wait, is that who I think it is behind Aang and Zuko?!

Somehow I just don’t see him WANTING a bigass statue like that. Doesn’t make it any less awesome though.

ME EITHER I keep thinking of Aang visiting Korra and her telling him and Aang just being… BUT WHY? WHAT FUN IS A STATUE? CAN YOU AT LEAST CLIMB IT OR SOMETHING? AM I MAKING A FUNNY FACE? …….NO? AWWWW.

^ THIS HAPPENED. I DON’T EVEN CARE.

I BET IT WAS ZUKO’S IDEA.

YES. YES IT WAS OH MY GOD.

it was a prank war

that escalated

and then suddenly Aang has a statue

this is canon noone will tell me otherwise

too flawless for me to handle tbh

they kept this up well into their old age and when aang died first zuko was all SUCKER! I GET TO MAKE YOUR MEMORIALS I WIN FOREVER

almost twenty years later, aang is chilling out in korra’s head and he’s like HOTMAN BINGO TRISCUIT HE DID NOT and korra just wants to get on with fighting terrorists and learning cool new bending tricks and every time she tries to spirit commune aang is like HAVE YOU DEFACED HIS PORTRAITS YET HAVE YOU PLEASE DELIVER A MESSAGE TO HIS GRANDCHILDREN FOR ME KORRA PLEASE WHO’S MY FOREVER GIRL COME ON I AM YOU IN A PAST LIFE YOU CAN’T TELL ME YOU AREN’T SECRETLY AN INCURABLE PRANKSTER

In light of recent news, this is just funnier than ever.

HAHAHAHAHA YES THIS IS THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN

Oh my god yes. It was a prank war. Nothing can convince me otherwise.

HEADCANON SECURED.
