Agreed.
I’m originally from Gaston County, North Carolina, which is RIGHT IN THE FUCKING MIDDLE OF THE BIBLEBELTED SWEET TEA DRINKING FUCKHOLE, and I said it all of my life up until I moved to the coast. Nobody says it unless they want to get beat up.
Fucking.
Thank.
You.
It’s like, I hear it at home, and I hate it. If I’m calling for people, I say “hey you guys” or “hey guys”, but “ya’ll” is like…wat?
It pisses me off to no end.
Oh wow I wonder how it would feel to be as sophisticated as you are! How intelligent and classy!
I wish someone had just told me how much of a bumpkin I was, and am, because I learned to speak in local dialect! If only I, too, had been fortunate enough to live on the coast, where evidently I could have been curbed of my shameful habit by roaming bands of people who would “beat me up” for saying “y’all”! Astonishing! Perhaps a tour of the “coast” (would love to know which) would help me become acquainted with a better, more acceptable American English.
I was so ashamed by your shrewd linguistic analysis (“but “ya’ll” is like…wat?”) that I decided to quickly gather some information on the extent of this awful social problem. Luckily, Wikimedia provided a map of the areas where the phrase “y’all” is especially common.
So we could really grasp the scope of this issue, I did a quick search of the populations of these contraction-blighted areas. The results are grim. A full 25% of the US population is need of serious linguistic intervention, and fast!
These figures aren’t good. With 25% percent of the US population admitted “y’all”-sayers, you have your work cut out for you: it will take quite a bit of time to cure the ignorance of 77,441,911 people! You have quite a lot of educating to do. However, I’m confident that with your help we can learn to curb our ways and quit being such moronic shitstains!
a love letter to ferrox:
im so glad i follow you

wow way to be a complete douchebag op I applaud you
Wow. Just…just wow.
I live in Kansas City, MO, and a LOT of people here say y’all. Is it fucking annoying as shit? YES. Do I think people are stupid just because they use a slang term that they were raised with? NO.
The OP is extremely ignorant if they think other people are stupid for using slang. I’m sure OP uses plenty of “coast” slang that would make them sound like a complete fuckhead in any part of the south.
So why don’t we all stop being ignorant shitstains and leave each other’s linguistic cultures alone?
Oh my fucking God.
I’m sorry, if you think me saying “y’all” is a notation of my intelligence, you’re automatically stupid as hell.
I… I still occasionally say “y’all” or “ain’t.” It’s pretty rare for me, but come on, I only spent the first two and a half years of my life south of the Mason-Dixon line before my family moved. If we hadn’t moved, though, it probably would have been a regular part of my vocabulary. So how interesting is it that these dickfaces think it’s better to judge intelligence on regional dialect instead of on thoughtfulness, discourse, or intellectual capacity?
Also, fuck them. How’s that for some discourse, eh? Fuckers.
I actually didn’t grow up with “y’all” (well, a little, but not so much for it to be automatic for me), but consciously adopted it for myself because I find it to be more gender neutral and acceptable than “you guys”, a phrase which treats masculinity as a default and an acceptable substitute for all of humanity.
So I say “y’all” because I am conscientious and intelligent.
Also “ain’t”, while colloquial, is incredibly grammatically useful. There are circumstances in the complicated verb forms of English under which the proper form of “to be” can be difficult to determine, but “ain’t” as a form of “is not” and “are not” gets around those situations quite nicely. Not that you should use it in a professional setting if you want to make a good impression. But, as with most slang, the word arose because the community that uses it felt there was a need, and it has an interesting and useful application.
Language is a social construct that exists to impart ideas. If it is doing that successfully and more than one person is agreeing upon its meaning, then it is correct. There is no objective right or wrong because no objective language exists. We made it up. The rules can change. Clarity and agreement are the only really important things.
I love words. They mean things! Playing with them is fun. Making up new ones is fun. Exploring new uses is fun. Dialects are fun. Elitism, especially that based in class discrimination and vilifying others, is bullshit that gets in the way of my wordplay and I will not put up with it.
