oh my fucking god can we not make Brave into a “princess movie” please
THEY BETTER NOT!
Are people actually wishing for that?
I’m talking about the people on Tumblr
making princess posts with stuff like
“Princess Merida, Brave (2012)”
it’s not even a Disney movie
and just like I don’t know I know being a princess doesn’t delegitimize her as a hero but to focus on that aspect before the movie’s even out
I don’t know
I don’t like it
No I get it. I mean I like princesses but it would be awesome all around (and character wise) if this didn’t have to be another case of a woman always needing to be a princess or queen. Women can be in stories and LEAD them without that aspect.
I hope she’s not marketed like a disney princess. I’d like to see a character for the older crowd.
Last I heard, they were intending on at least making the attempt to incorporate her into the Disney Princess franchise, assuming legal things do not get in the way (like they did for Giselle from Enchanted, who wound up not being incorporated because of rights issues involving using Amy Adams’ likeness. A similar thing could happen here with the complicated relationship between Disney and Pixar).
I would actually be fine with this if they also made Lilo a part of the franchise and announced a new line of movies with female protagonists whose stories were not princess-hood dependent (and whose protagonists weren’t necessarily princesses) who would also be incorporated. Making the “princess” of “Disney Princess” even more symbolic (rather than literal) of a title than it already is.
But I agree that, even though Merida is technically a princess, her story feels ill-suited to the franchise as it stands now.
But I also feel like, maybe it’ll be good to have a princess in that franchise whose story isn’t a love story? Maybe the right thing is to diversify the types of stories in the franchise. Like, maybe this is a boon to the franchise, rather than a slight against Brave.
IDK. HAVE I EVER MENTIONED I HAVE A REALLY COMPLICATED RELATIONSHIP WITH DISNEY MOVIES AND CHILDREN’S MEDIA AIMED AT GIRLS?
